Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN’s) For Applications You Haven’t Imagined Yet

At the Dawn of the Internet Era many process engineers and designers viewed wireless sensors as a great way to save on wiring costs especially in retrofit projects requiring long lengths of wire just to connect one sensor to a SCADA system located on the other end of the plant. Wireless technologies adopted their own standard (ISA100-IEC 62734) back in 2010 and they continue to thrive in the industrial automation market, however if you want to monitor 100’s of more points in the same process then costs can become prohibitive or you are limited by the number of points the PLC or SCADA system can manage – so what’s the solution? Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) to the rescue.

These small and relatively low cost wireless sensors have allowed engineers to develop new applications that would have passed as science fiction back in the 90’s. These spatially distributed autonomous devices allow 100’s upon 100’s of data nodes to connect together over a common mesh network capable of communicating with a primary node (gateway) that provides WiFi, Bluetooth or RF connectivity back to the wired world and other distributed nodes. Many of the newer WSN’s also have computational abilities that allow them to control actuators or perform edge or cloud analytics over time, distance and spatial domains.

On Thursday, September 28 join us for our 1ST Last Thursday of the Month Members Meeting to kick off the new 2017-2018 session. Come learn about the latest in WSN technologies and where it’s headed and enjoy the opportunity to network with others in the profession who may share the same interests as you. Our guest speaker will be Cole MacDonald from Mero Technologies.

Venue:  5400 Dixie Road, Sandman Signature Mississauga Hotel, Huron Room (Main Floor).

Time: Free for ISA Members Dinner beginning from 5:30 pm. Presentation starts at 7:00 pm.
